Meet Emma Schouvieller | Intern at APX
My name is Emma Schouvieller and I am a Marketing Intern at APX Construction Group this summer! I graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato in May 2024. I am super excited to share my internship experience with you!
Some of the tasks that I have been doing are creating Google business posts, creating YouTube shorts, creating Facebook and Instagram posts, and helping out with the MY Place fundraising event. I’ve been able to sit in on several meetings and it has been so nice to be able to listen and gain knowledge on a variety of topics.
I learned about APX through Joe Schavey, a friend of mine who started as an intern at APX and now is a Project Manager | Estimator here. He spoke so highly of the company and so highly of all of the employees. He told me about the marketing team and I became really interested. I wanted to find an internship where I was going to learn different marketing strategies and also an internship that was going to help me get a better understanding of what it takes to be successful in this field. After I met with Jamie, I knew that it was a perfect fit for me and what I wanted. I was very excited to hear back from them that they wanted me to join their team this summer.
My experience at APX has been great. Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly. The environment here is awesome and it has really shown me what a great company looks like. I’ve gotten the opportunity to get a good grasp on what goes into marketing a construction company. I have had the opportunity to work with the marketing team that does phenomenal work. They go above and beyond in everything they do.
This internship is contributing to my growth in so many ways. I am having the chance to learn by hands-on experience. I have been learning how to use different apps and editing tools that I haven’t been exposed to before. I’ve been able to watch the marketing team do their day-to-day tasks which has been very helpful.
Some knowledge that I have learned during this internship is that making good relationships and having a strong network is very important. Being involved with the community and helping out other businesses as well. One thing that I really think is cool about APX is the support that they give to so many other businesses. They really care about the success of others and want to be a part of it.
I think that getting an internship is important because you gain so much knowledge from professionals in the field that you are going into. I think that being able to get feedback is great as well because you grow that way. I feel very fortunate that I am interning at APX this summer because not only are they a successful company but they also have a great team that makes everything come together.
Meet Bennett DeBlieck | Intern at APX
I had the opportunity to interview Bennett DeBlieck who is a Project Superintendent Intern here at APX! Bennett is here this summer for 12 weeks. He is currently a student at Minnesota State University, Mankato majoring in Construction Management and will be graduating December of 2023.
Bennett chose to intern at APX because he says, “APX Construction Group is the best there is, the best in the business.” APX partners with the Construction Management Capstone Class (CM 450) at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Bennett is currently taking CM 497 which is a summer internship class at MNSU.
Some tasks that Bennett has been assigned during his internship here at APX are scheduling, site safety meetings, and daily logs. “Scheduling is a task that I have been assigned. I make 3 week look ahead schedules. I also help with site safety meetings, briefing new workers on how to report incidents, what to wear, what not to wear and things like that. I do daily logs that say what work has been done, the safety procedures, who was there and how long they were there.”
Bennett described his overall experience interning at APX. “Interning at APX has been really good. It is very diverse and we do a lot of different projects. I get to sit in on a lot of stuff like meetings. It’s been nice being out on the sites, which I got to choose. It’s been really nice to get field experience.”
Another question Bennett was asked was how his internship is contributing to his growth. “Working at APX has been helping me grow from networking. It is also a practical application of my college education. I’m getting hands-on experience here which is contributing to my growth.”
Bennett shared some knowledge that he has learned during his internship. “I’ve learned a lot about scheduling which I think is the most important. Getting people on the site and on time. I’ve learned a lot about coordination because everything has its own order and if it’s not in order it can be really difficult.”
The last question for Bennett was why he thinks that getting an internship is so important. “I think that it is important to get an internship to be able to use practical skills and education that you were taught in your college classes. To be able to apply what you have learned. We get taught such a broad range of construction management in school because you can’t learn about all of the different careers out there or you’d be there forever. It is nice to have a more specific job that you can learn more about. It’s nice to have an internship because it is narrowed down.”
Meet Hannah Stich | Intern at APX
I also got the opportunity to interview Hannah Stich! She is a Project Superintendent intern at APX this summer. Hannah is in the Construction Management Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato and will be graduating May of 2024. Her internship at APX this summer is 12 weeks long.
The first question that Hannah was asked was why she chose to intern at APX. “I think that the atmosphere at APX is really awesome. I wanted the opportunity to dip my toes into the commercial world, because I had mainly a civil engineering background. I knew I would learn a lot interning here.”
Hannah described some tasks that she has been working on during her internship. “I have been assigned to do job site management. I do daily reporting to the office and weekly reporting to the owners. I do a lot of communicating with contractors. I have been doing job site safety, basically I am making sure that everyone is following OSHA guidelines.”
I asked Hannah about her overall experience at APX. “The people at APX have been super welcoming. They are all so willing to help you and teach you all of the different things there is to know. I have been learning a lot by interning here.”
Hannah mentions how this internship is contributing to her growth. “My internship at APX is giving me tools that I can take with me throughout my career to be successful.”
Hannah shared with me some of the knowledge that she has gained through her internship. “I’ve learned that it is okay when things are not going the way you expected them to go. I’ve learned not to stress over the little things. I’ve been taught that in the end it’s going to all work out.”
The last question Hannah was asked was why she thinks getting an internship was important. “I think that getting an internship is important because when you enter the field you’ll have a good background and know what is going on in different aspects. This way you are not blindly going into your career.”
Conclusion
As we celebrate National Intern Day, the team at APX Construction Group would like to thank Emma, Hannah and Bennett for their time, perspectives and dedication to learning this summer.
